Sally Lindsay's real life from famous husband to bodyshaming nightmare on Corrie (2024)

Sally Lindsay is back on our screens with a new series, Love Rat, tonight. The Channel 5 psychological drama sees Emma, played by Sally, fall in love with an enigmatic stranger abroad – only to discover he isn't at all who he claims to be.

She meets 'millionaire' Niko, played by Gerald Kyd, on a holiday to Cyprus after a painful divorce from longtime partner Pete, played by Neil Morrissey. But while he initially sweeps her off her feet, things soon start to unravel.

Sally will be well-known to viewers for various roles over her 25-year career. She's probably most famous for playing Shelley Unwin in the long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street.

But viewers will also recognise her from Sky One comedy series Mount Pleasant, BBC sitcom Still Open All Hours, Channel 5's The Madame Blanc Mysteries and ITV detective series Scott & Bailey.

Sally, 50, has also previously appeared on ITV's Loose Women, replaced Warwick Davis as host of ITV quiz show Tenable while he had other filming conflicts and was a guest presenter when Richard Osman left BBC quiz show Pointless.

But what do we know about Sally away from her incredible career on TV? Below we look at her life away from the cameras, including her very famous husband, number one single before she was famous and her tough experience with body shaming on Coronation Street.

Sally Lindsay's very famous husband

In 2013, Sally married the former drummer of The Style Council and Paul Weller Band, Steve White. He left The Style Council in 1989 to pursue other projects and went on to play with many well known acts, including Ian Dury, The James Taylor Quartet, The Redskins and the Jazz Renegades. He also performed at Live 8 with The Who at Hyde Park in 2005.

Sally and Steve have twin sons, Victor and Louie, who are 13 years old. Sally told Prima last year: "Steve and I have been together 20 years and married for 10. Working away a lot is what keeps the spark in our marriage – I genuinely believe that. We always have loads to talk about.

"Steve is the head of music on my shows. He’ll ask me what I want and I’ll come up with the most obscure, ridiculous references, but he’ll know what I mean because he’s my husband. He has a vast musical knowledge. He’s a brilliant man; he’s lovely and he’s sexy and he’s funny – and a rock star, which helps! He’s also the best dad."

Sally and Steve were joined by the likes of fashion consultant Gok Wan, television presenter Carol Vorderman, comedian Alan Carr and actress Suranne Jones at their wedding. And Sally explained why she had chosen to walk down the aisle with Steve on the big day.

She told Hello! magazine at the time: "The person who looks after me the most in the world is Steve so it would seem daft if we didn't walk up the aisle together. It was also really important to me that we walked down as a family."

Sally Lindsay's bodyshaming nightmare on Coronation Street

Sally previously opened up about a tough experience where she was bodyshamed when she first got cast on Coronation Street. She said: "I remember when I was first behind that [Rovers] bar and there was a journalist, I probably shouldn't say who it was, I don't know if he works any more.

"And he wrote an article in a well-known newspaper saying, 'How can they put this fat, ugly woman in such a glamorous role?' I was 26, very vulnerable, didn't know anything about the industry at all. I read it and I couldn't get my head round it. I'd never even thought about my weight before then."

Sally Linday's number one hit before she was famous

Sally had appeared on TV a long time before she decided on acting as a career. She was just seven when she appeared on Top of the Pops with her school choir.

The St Winifred's School Choir released There's No One Quite Like Grandma, which hit number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1980.

Love Rat starts on Channel 5 tonight (Monday, March 11) at 9pm.
