Beverly Nyman - August 05, 1934 - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Winchendon)

Obituary Preview: On April 3, 2022 we said goodbye to Beverly (Bever) Nyman who after many years of mental and physical health challenges, died from a cardiac event. Though her life accomplishments as defined by traditional measures may have been modest, her victories over debilitating mental health issues and dedication as a mother and wife are what made Beverly’s life a remarkable one. Her fortitude in the face of what were immense obstacles remind us of the true nature of what success is.

Beverly Rachel Nyman was born in Fitchburg, MA on August 5, 1934, the third child of Florence Forshner and Samuel Bever. Beverly graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1953 and earned her LPN from Winthrop Community Hospital in 1955. Beverly married Richard Nyman in November of 1954, a marriage that lasted over 67 years. While being a dedicated mother to four children Beverly held numerous administrative jobs over her life at companies that included Quality Fruits of Fitchburg, SEARS Roebucks in Leominster and finally settling into working as an office manager for several doctors and dentists in the Fitchburg area for over 15 years.

For many years Beverly was a dedicated member of the parish of Christ Church in Fitchburg serving as a guild member and on the vestry. She was known for her friendly and welcoming manner for both long term church members and newcomers. She was always ready with phone calls to inquire about members who needed support and encouragement when they were struggling.

At home Beverly was an expert scrap booker compiling over 60 books for her children and both immediate and extended family. Her photo albums were especially notable – organized and annotated with quips that always brought laughs and smiles. Beverly also loved to garden and worked side-by-side with her husband Richard in maintaining a stunning and well-manicured lawn and garden. A true source of pride for both of them.

Over her life Beverly enjoyed many different hobbies including sewing, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, raising chickens and turkeys and recreational activities such as skiing, swimming, backpacking, hiking and cycling (even learning how to ride a bike as an adult – a difficult feat). Later in life, Beverly enjoyed binge-watching numerous TV series including Highlander, NCIS, and various “law and order” shows with her husband.

In the 1950’s and 60’s a person’s mental health was poorly understood. The stigma and lack of treatments available led to a strong sense of shame and loneliness. Physiologically and psychologically Beverly struggled with imbalances that manifested as obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety. Despite these personal and societal barriers, Beverly fought all her life to manage her symptoms and provide a stable home life for her family. She was an early adopter of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, a now worldwide secular meditation treatment. She persevered through years of therapy and medication in attempts to find quality of life. And though not always successful she never gave up. Her family understood that her efforts and resilience were not only for her, but for her family as well.

Beverly was predeceased by her husband Richard, her eldest son Mark, her three siblings Robert Bever, Ralph Bever, and Betty DeCarolis, her father Samuel Bever, mother Florence Forshner and her stepfather Otto Rossner. She leaves behind three children, 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Marcia (her daughter) and Eric Flinkstrom and family: Hilary (Flinkstrom) and Michael McGinness family (Braiden, Caleb, Avery), Ethan Flinkstrom, Emily Flinkstrom and Jay Wilgus family (Jasper and Merick), Rachel (Flinkstrom) and Jesse Hardie family (Cooper and CJ), Sam Flinkstrom and Roxanne Poulin family (Summer), Chad and Taylor Flinkstrom family (Aili), Zachary Flinkstrom and Colby Wood and Kayla Flinkstrom. Martin (her son) and Carolyn Nyman and family: Sydney, Jackson and Shelby Nyman. Matthew (her son) and May Nyman and family: Kaarina, Flynn and Devin Nyman .

Richard E Nyman - September 22, 1933 - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Winchendon)

Obituary Preview: Richard E. Nyman was born September 22,1933 in Peterborough, NH to Ellu Nyman and Aili (Éskola) Nyman. He spent the first few years of his life in New Ipswich, NH and moved to Fitchburg, MA in 1941 following the death of his father. He grew up in Fitchburg's "Finntown" and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1951. He graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. During his college career he was a member of the men’s varsity soccer team for 3 years, including the 1952 undefeated team.

Richard began his teaching career at Westford Academy in 1955 and spent 41 years teaching various science courses including biology, chemistry, and environmental science. His career took him to Portland High School in Portland, Connecticut, Oakmont Regional High School, Quabbin Regional High School and Groton-Dunstable Regional High School. He served as science department chairman at both Quabbin and Groton-Dunstable. He was a member of the State Science Supervisors Association as well as president of the Wachusett League of Science Supervisors.

Richard pursued a graduate degree from Boston University earning a Master’s of Education from Boston University. He also participated in advanced studies in science education sponsored by the National Science Foundation including fellowships at Colgate University, Boston College, Holy Cross and the University of South Dakota. At a time when most high school students were limited in the number of available courses, Richard used these advanced studies to develop a cutting-edge science program at Groton-Dunstable that enabled students to take more than 4 science courses during their high school career. In one of these classes, he engaged students in a study of the Nashua River ecosystem including canoe trips to collect data to evaluate water chemistry and ecosystem health. He retired from teaching in 1996.

In addition to his teaching career, Richard had a notable and impactful career as a sports coach including coaching track, basketball, baseball and, above all, Boys’ varsity soccer! Richard coached varsity soccer for 34 years with 30 of those years as the coach at Groton-Dunstable Regional High School. “Coach Nyman’s” teams were always well-prepared and well-disciplined, and his players gave 100% (or else!) during practices and games. He did not just coach from the sidelines but patrolled the pitch barking commands and using his piercing whistle to guide his players. He was lavish in his praise and exacting in his expectations. He motivated players not only as athletes but as students and well-rounded young men. Coach Nyman’s teams finished over .500 each year but one, won multiple league championships, four District titles and most notable, two State Championships, one in Division 3 and one in Division 2. He coached two High School All-Americans, Brian Bergeron and Derek McCaffrey. He was a member and past president of the Central Mass Soccer Coaches Association and the National Soccer Coaches Association. He was selected Central Mass Coach of the Year four times and State Coach of the year once and was selected as the Lowell Sun Coach of the Year nine times. Richard was a long-time and dedicated member of the Ashburnham Lions Club serving as President four times. On the District 33A level he served as a Zone Chairman and Region Chairman and as President of its Sight mobile Committee for three terms. He

was the recipient of both the Melvin Jones and Joseph J. Camada awards for outstanding service to Lionism.

Richard was an avid sports fan closely following the Sox, Pats, Celtics, Bruins and Revolution. He followed them closely often with a jaundiced eye and critical phrase. He was an avid skier, golfer and a long-time member of the Winchendon School Golf club and he especially enjoyed rounds of golf played with his sons and grandsons.

Richard’s wife of 67 years, Beverly R. Nyman died two days after Richard on April 3, 2022. He is survived by three children: Marcia Flinkstrom (Eric) of South Berwick, ME., Martin Nyman (Carolyn) of Waconia, MN and Matthew Nyman (May) of Corvallis, OR.
